Juan Perfumo (c:a 1800-1860) was one of the most influential Andalusian luthiers in the generation before Torres. Torres based his work on this very style of typically southern Spanish guitar design (also Fernando Sor prefered these type of guitars). Perfumo opened his workshop on Calle la Cruz Verde, 14, around 1839 and subsequently moved to several other addresses. Although he had an international reputation; his guitars has been found in such remote places as Argentine, Finland, England and Japan, there are only about twelve of his instruments known today, making this particular guitar a very rare sample.
